Research Focus

Understanding Disease Progression in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is highly prevalent in the elderly and occurs in up to 80% of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. CAA is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta in the vessel walls, which leads to vessel dysfunction and often results in hemorrhagic stroke. This project seeks to understand the factors contributing to the progression of brain injury in CAA. We utilize large existing datasets containing longitudinal MRI data to investigate brain tissue injury and its progression throughout the disease course. Data for this project are already acquired; however, the student will have the opportunity to visit our MRI facilities and will be included in a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team working on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
