Research Focus

My group is interested in how brains process sensory stimuli and use them to select appropriate motor output, and in particular how they are able to use reafferent sensory input, which is generated by their own motor output, to modify their own behavior. We can use recently developed imaging techniques to monitor neuronal activity at cellular resolution everywhere in the brain of a larval zebrafish as it behaves and learns to interact with its environment. This research can help us to understand the role of the cerebellum in sensorimotor transformations and how animals are able to execute motor output of varying intensity. Future goals include continuing to characterize neuronal populations during these motor learning paradigms by using both imaging and electrophysiology, an ongoing detailed and quantitative description of the behavior involved and the development of tools and techniques to perturb neuronal activity to test hypotheses about the underlying circuitry.

Primary Technique(s): Electrophysiology, imaging
